California Zephyr, San Francisco

Platform, San Francisco Station, boarding the California Zephyr, 2015

The most harrowing trip I have ever been on…. This is not the traditional train car that you can expect to ride in, just so happens that this ill-fated expedition had this vintage car attached, because it had been hired privately. It was pure luck that I got this photo.

I’d always wanted to do a long train journey – but in this instance our train was delayed by 35 hours – most of which we were stuck in a corn field in lord knows where – and in the end we had to be rescued by bus. We limped into Chicago … I’m still not over it.

That said, in the scheme of things this could have been worse. I’m not sorry that I went, but I would warn anyone thinking of taking this trip to beware.
